Pamela Palma
Artist’s Statement
Who I am:
I am a professional /textile designer and fiber artist who has been continually plying threads, yarns, and
fabrics since age five. The visual and tactile sensibilities of fiber, reinforced by instant gratification from
creating beautiful, useful objects with my hands, fanned my passion to utilize my unique abilities
throughout my lifetime.
What I do:
I am able to envision highly detailed, complex designs which I manifest on my floor loom.
I create distinctive fabrics through dyeing, weaving, sewing, printing, painting, and framing.
This work requires right- and left-brain capabilities: vision, attention to detail, mathematics,
color sense, patience, perseverance, and dexterity - gifts I greatly value.
My art transcends traditional precepts of handwoven to become
Rad/Trad - radical traditionalism - relevant, contemporary works of fiber art.
Why I do it:
Woven fiber is integral to our evolution and our daily lives. For 35,000 years people have twisted
and interlaced plant fibers. Our bodies are in contact with fiber from our moment of birth until we
are laid to rest. When I am weaving, I am traveling along the continuum of our shared histories,
transducing our heritage through the evolutionary umbilical cord from what has passed to what will be.
Objectives:
I am compelled to use my skills to create objects of beauty and wonder that are pleasing and purposeful.
My art is also a vehicle to advance awareness of societal values.
Inspirations:
Nature inspires much of my work, particularly the sublime subtlety of New Mexico’s vistas and
the proliferation of color found in the tropics.
