Money Laundry l and Money Laundry ll, mixed media fiber art. can be purchased as a diptych!
Original artwork, woven by hand in a herringbone pattern with hand dyed cotton yarns and black linen yarn. Woven by Pamela Palma on a complex floor loom. This work is embellished with replicated Colonial currencies and Floridian currency from the 1800s and obsolete Greek Drachmas, replaced by the Euro. The currencies are both woven into the body of the work and appliquéd onto the surface.
In my series, Money Weavings, which explores money as a societal construct, I ask ‒
What is the value of money? What is the currency behind the currency? These two artworks expose how overt and important slavery was to the Southern states. Their currencies are backed by the cotton industry, made possible by exploitation of enslaved people, depicted on the paper money planting and harvesting the cotton.
