My Mixed Media Fiber Art Series intended as visual eye candy to delight the
senses. It is an antidote to the uncertainty of the Covid years, to transport
the viewer as well as the artist out of the fog by focusing on cheerful
metaphorical references. It is an imaginary exploration into the tropics, a
magical profusion of colors, textures, and flora where one can lose oneself in
splendorific nature. Sheltering at home in the confines of isolation with
access to few resources and very little external stimulation I chose to “go
within.” There I found a tropical fantasy world I recreated using materials and
equipment at hand..
Culling imagery from mail order catalogs, I transposed flatness (paper) into
multidimensional fullness (tapestry) on small hand looms. Variations of watery
Aquamarine hues contrasted by hot pinks, bright sky-blue accents and rainforest
pigmentations of the paper images are augmented. I sliced and wove together 2D
paper with carefully curated 3D yarns from my available stash.
The tapestries developed organically, each one directing the next into an
impressionistic triptych. The proliferation of visual media gives the viewer
just enough source information to activate her/his own imagination. What goes
on in these secret cottages nestled within island jungles?
