Money Laundry l, mixed media fiber art by Pamela Palma.
Original artwork, woven by hand with hand dyed cotton yarns on a complex loom. It is embellished with replicated colonial currency and foreign currencies which are both woven into the body of the work and appliquéd onto the surface.
My series, Money Weavings, explores money as a societal construct. I ask -
What is the value of money? What is the currency behind the currency? The colonial currency
issuedin 1862 by the Cotton Planters Loan Association of South Carolina clearly depicts the exploitation of enslaved people who are harvesting the cotton for the benefit of wealthy plantation owners.
